How to Start a Podcast with No Audience: Spotify for Podcasters (Guide)

Now is probably one of the best times to start recording and get going.

In case you don’t know, a podcast is a series of spoken-word, audio episodes, all focused on a particular topic or theme.

I started my podcast in 2020. Before that, I was a guest on a few of my friends’ podcasts before I finally worked up the confidence to do it myself.

Here are 8 reasons why I believe you should start your own podcast if you haven’t already:

Step 1: Create an account

Document your life

Podcasting is an opportunity to record your life and what you experienced. You can include your wins and your losses. These can be shared to benefit others and to remind you of where you are going.

Beyond creating different topics, you can just talk about what you are experiencing on a day to day basis.

Your viewpoints can be expressed and even challenged. The more you document and learn the more you will refine your values or re-acknowledge them.

How you evolve over time and listening to your old episodes will be a chance to go back in time. I think a major benefit is listening to how you are growing over time.

Step 2: Record your first episode

Become a better speaker

Starting your own podcast is a way to articulate your words better. When you playback your episodes you are able to hear your filler words.

As you become a better speaker, you will learn how to develop new ideas and present them clearly. As you become better at preparing material for your podcast you will likely have a solid outline and a gist of your message.

3. Connect with a global audience

Podcasting provides a unique opportunity to communicate with a like-minded international audience. Really refine who your target audience is and don’t limit yourself locally for maximum growth. Consider how interviewing people could help you tap into someone else’s audience and efforts.

This is a chance to learn about other people’s cultures. And if your business is able to take customers from around the world, it benefits you to make this type of impact.

4. Become an expert on the topic you cover

Sometimes we don’t believe we have the capability of being experts. This is untrue.

We can all become experts in something and podcasting is a way to build credibility. To enhance your message, you will research and learn how to improve. The topics you talk about will be your expertise as you record more episodes and build a catalog.

5. Build your personal brand

Decide what your personal brand is about and what it embodies. Some of the main ideas of personal branding can be read in this blog post.

Or you can create and watch how your brand develops as you show up and improve over time. As you get feedback, you can further establish the uniqueness of your personal brand.


6. Take advantage of minimal startup costs

The cost for starting up a podcast could be free or upwards of a few hundred dollars. You can upgrade your equipment over time as you gain traction and get proof of concept and more direction for your content.

There are many free hosting platforms that can get you started such as Anchor so do your research. If you go purely audio and start with your phone then there will be minimal start-up costs.

7. Potential to monetize

The goal is to produce consistently valuable content which will allow you to build a brand and an audience over time. Most people spend a bunch of time trying to pick the perfect idea whereas I thought about just launching into it and improving the branding as I go. Everyone is different.

Building the habit of expectation from your audience with a consistent production schedule is what you will need to do. 8. Join in the growth

Here is a little more detail into my experience so far:

I started my podcast on my lunch break in my car. I started with a basic idea of what I wanted to say but over time I developed a mental script for what to say. It has been a form of self-care for me.

The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. It’s a great way to catalog how you grow and what you grow through.
